Campaign Naming Guide

Name campaigns so future you does not suffer.

Good campaign names make reports easier to read, links easier to manage, and results easier to compare later.

A campaign name is not just admin. It is the label your analytics will use later. A messy name today becomes a confusing report tomorrow.

Why campaign names matter

When you build a UTM link, the utm_campaign field tells analytics which campaign the visitor came from. If everyone uses different naming styles, your reports become messy very quickly.

For example, these might all mean the same campaign, but analytics will treat them as different names:

Mixed style Spring Launch
Different spelling spring-launch
Too vague campaign1

A naming convention keeps everything tidy. It means your links, reports and campaign notes all speak the same language.

A simple naming formula

You do not need a complicated system. A simple structure is enough for most small teams, charities and busy marketers.

Readable names vs short codes

A readable name is best when people need to understand it quickly. A short code is useful when you need something compact for campaign IDs, spreadsheets, filenames or internal labels.

✅ Readable name

foothold-2026-04-student-recruitment is longer, but easy for someone else to understand.

🔤 Short code

fh-26-04-stu-rec is compact and useful when space is limited.

⚠️ Bad name

newcampaign-final-final2 tells you almost nothing. A classic villain. Avoid it.

When the FastUTM Name Generator helps

If you are creating several campaigns in a month, a name generator stops everything drifting into chaos. You can enter the year, month, brand code, campaign idea and category, then generate cleaner names and short codes faster.

This is especially helpful when one campaign has several versions, such as LinkedIn posts, QR posters, newsletters, student pages and Google Ads.
